How GPS Time Tracking Works on Construction Sites

GPS time tracking uses the location of a worker's phone to record when they arrive at and leave a job site. It is a way of answering the oldest question in construction payroll: how many hours did this worker actually spend on site?
The system starts with a geofence. A geofence is a virtual boundary drawn around a site, defined by a center point and a radius. In FastBuild, each construction site is registered with a map-pinned location and a geofence radius that matches the physical boundary of the project.
When a worker opens the app and taps check-in, the phone reports its current GPS coordinates. FastBuild compares those coordinates with the site's geofence. If the worker is inside the boundary, the check-in is accepted and a work session begins. The session records the employee, the site, the time, and the coordinates.
At the end of the shift, the worker taps check-out. The same location check applies, and the session closes with a check-out time. The hours for the session are calculated automatically from the difference between the two times.
What happens when a worker is outside the geofence? FastBuild does not silently accept the check-in. The session is recorded, marked as a GPS exception, and a manager is notified. The record shows the distance from the site boundary, so the exception can be reviewed on its merits.
Why does this matter for a construction company? The time record becomes verifiable. A paper timesheet records what a worker claimed. A GPS record shows when the claim was made and where the worker was at that moment. Disputes over hours become conversations about the record rather than about memory.
GPS time tracking also solves the multi-site problem. A company running crews on several sites can see which site each worker attended each day, instead of relying on each crew to report its own attendance separately.
There are practical limitations worth understanding. GPS accuracy is generally within a few meters outdoors, which is why geofence radii are usually set in the tens or hundreds of meters rather than a few meters. The system verifies that a phone was inside the boundary at check-in and check-out; it does not continuously track movement throughout the day. For most payroll and attendance purposes, that is the right level of detail.
Setting up GPS time tracking is a one-time configuration per site: pin the location, set the radius, and assign the crew. After that, the daily process is a tap at each end of the shift.
The records produced by GPS time tracking feed the rest of the operation. Session hours roll into the daily report, weekly hours are summarized for review, and the pay period calculation uses the same attendance data that the supervisor saw during the week.
